Tough call for me, cause there's three bands that, for me, are hard to put one over the others. I'll just give top 3 (in no specific order):
Tool
Lamb of God
Trivium

sometimes the screaming needs to stop....

Impossible to say, but I can list some of my favorites:
Wagner - not really a band but I do love classical music and opera
Abba - can't beat good old pop - and these guys still rule supreme!
Metallica - those guys are living legends!
Nightwish - both the old with Tarja and the new with Anette
Hammerfall - The "80's metal sound" of the new millenium
ManOwar - never get tired of those kids, but I like the old albums best
Within Temptation - great vocals and nice symphonic rock/metal
Evanescence - more great vocals and nice soft-goth/rock
Volbeat - up and coming Danish metal band with a quite unique sound
Skyclad - miss the original band with the original Folk/Thrash metal sound
Rammstein - German industrial/metal that actually works,- best metal ballads ever!
Scorpions - legends of rock/soft metal,- great ballads!
Dio - can't forget the old master of soft metal!
Iron Maiden - so many great songs
